Are you sick of living in a world where you can’t play 3D games on a 750 inch display in your own home? Well worry no more my friend because the Sony Personal 3D Viewer is here.
During the Consumer Electronics Show last year (that would be 2011 for those of you who aren’t paying attention) Sony had a prototype for a head mounted 3D display on show. Now one year later they have officially announced the Sony Personal 3D Viewer and it looks like a powerful unit. The headset comes complete with dual OLED screens and virtual 5.1 surround sound speakers to create a theatre-like experience without needing a projector and a sound proofed room but these projectors for gaming suit the headset the most. The 18 mm OLED screens output an impressive 1280×720 HD resolution which may seem small, except that wearing the headset presents you with the equivalent of a 750 inch screen (I wasn’t lying in the first paragraph!) with a virtual viewing distance of about 20 metres. Not bad right? The best part is that although you can watch 2D content on them perfectly, the use of a separate screen for each eye allows for a perfect 3D viewing experience without any crosstalk or ghosting.
The unit is compatible with any HDMI input so you could effectively use it to play video games from any HDMI console, watch Blu-rays or DVDs, or even just watch normal TV. The price tag of $899.95 in Australia may seem steep especially for a display that only one person can use at a time but it’s not hard to see the benefits of it. It would be perfect for anyone who doesn’t have the room or budget to get a large 3D TV, or if you only have one TV and are in a situation where you can’t always use it because someone else it. That is of course completely disregarding the fact that it would also be absolutely perfect for creating a completely immersed experience while playing video games.
If you get one I have one suggestion: make sure you lock up your house before playing games using this awesome unit. Someone could come in and rob you and you wouldn’t even notice!
